"9/11 became an excuse, a pre-text, to launch the kind of sweeping political changes the ruling elite of the US desperately wanted, but could not pass off yet, on the American public."- #1 of 6 Reasons to Oppose the War in Afghanistan.

Kickoff Event for Viva Palestina
by Brian Lenzo | Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Added Correction: There were 2 politicians in NYC to oppose the bombing of Gaza, Assemblywoman Inez Barron of Brooklyn also opposed it publicly.

The Viva Palestina convoy kicked off at the House of the Lords Church in Brooklyn, NY.

One of the many highlights was New York City Councilman Charles Barron who demanded the release of Cynthia McKinney who is still being detained in Israel after being captured in international waters off the coast of the Gaza strip.  Councilman Barron was the only NYC politician to protest the massacre in Gaza in December and January, but as he explained, “Don’t think of me as a politician, I am an elected revolutionary!”

He will be joining us on our convoy to Gaza and we hope to ask him a few questions for the Sitch readers!  If you have any questions you would like to ask him, post them in the comments below.

We leave for Cairo at 4pm, the next post will be from Cairo, Egypt.  Here are some images of the rally last night:
