NYU Students Detained, Suspended, & Threatened + Update: Videos
by admin | Friday, February 20th, 2009

I’ve compiled a number of YouTube videos of the occupation that can be found here.

Faced with dwindling numbers, university tactics, and possibly some organizational issues the occupation of New York University is now over.

NYU, notorious for breaking campaigns for worker’s unionization, used all the tricks it had up its sleeve to scare the crap and threaten occupiers into submission. NYU administration tricked a delegation of students by requesting to negotiate with them and detaining them as soon as they left the occupied area. Earlier this morning both Wireless Internet access and power outlets were shut off, cutting off communication to supporters. Students have also been suspended and possibly evicted from NYU housing.

The movement for divestment and socially responsible investment WILL definitely see some loses and this was definitely one of them. However, other students are planning to occupy their universities. Overseas in the UK, every week there is a new occupation. In the UK there have been a number of successful divestment campaigns. But there are also a couple of schools still trying to get their administration to negotiate. The University of Rochester and the New School occupations still have their momentum going and the possibility of winning more demands and divestment.

This is definitely something we need to learn from, what went wrong, how was it organized, and all…but this is definitely NOT the end of the beginning of an international divestment and occupation campaign that’s being waged on college campuses.

University’s like NYU will do everything they can to stop us, because they know that we pose a threat to business as usual. We have that power.
